When I first started a gym, Blinn Fitness in 2014, I was driven by a desire to start a gym that was truly different from the commercial fitness centers that I saw all around me. As a personal trainer with a bachelors degree in exercise science and a former Emerald Cup physique competitor in 2017, I understood the importance of proper exercise and dieting in achieving one’s fitness goals. But as someone who had been in the industry for a while, I also saw firsthand how commercial gyms often took advantage of their members with high prices, lack of personalized service, and a lack of passion and knowledge among the staff.
I knew I could do better.
My goal was to start a gym that would truly transform lives and offer a different approach to fitness, with a focus on strength training. I wanted to build a gym where members would feel supported and empowered to achieve their goals, no matter what they might be.
Starting a gym from scratch is no easy feat, but it can be done. I started by outfitting a small public storage unit with equipment I found on Craigslist, and slowly built up my gym until it became the 3000 square foot facility it is today. If you’re thinking about starting your own gym, know that it’s possible – even if you’re starting from nothing.
I’ve learned a lot through my journey as a gym owner, and one of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that a great trainer and a great business owner are two very different things. A great trainer is someone who is passionate about fitness and has the knowledge to help others reach their goals. But a great business owner is someone who understands the financial and operational side of running a gym.
I wrote “From the Ground Up” detailing my journey of growing a personal training business from a small public storage unit to a large commercial gym. The book is designed for aspiring gym owners looking to start a gym, and provides valuable tips and advice on how to grow a business without the need for secret partners, a large sum of cash, or big loans. This book offers a first-hand account of the experience of how to take your training business from small to big. It’s a guide for those who want to take their business to the next level.
With my strong passion for health and fitness, I want to help at least one person out there achieve their dream of being a gym owner, even if they’re starting from nothing. My first-hand experience and helpful tips can help guide you in opening a gym from equipment from craigslist inside a public storage unit to a 4500 sq ft gym. And I also dive into what makes a great trainer and business owner. So if you’re inspired to open your own gym, know that it’s possible and I am here to help.
